I recently attended the BLN Adult Literacy Webinar and was thoroughly impressed by the depth and quality of the session. The presenters did an outstanding job of broadening the definition of literacy, showing how it connects to cultural identity, historical context, and community empowerment. I gained a much deeper understanding of how literacy can be a tool for personal and collective transformation, especially for marginalized communities.

One of the highlights for me was the case study on Maya Angelou???s poem ???Still I Rise.??? This segment brought a wonderful variety to the webinar and encouraged open, thoughtful discussion among participants. Analyzing the poem???s themes of resilience and collective strength helped me see how literature can inspire and unite people facing adversity. It was both moving and intellectually stimulating, and it made the learning experience truly interactive.

Overall, I left the webinar feeling inspired and much better equipped to approach adult literacy with a more holistic and inclusive mindset. I highly recommend this webinar to anyone interested in education, social justice, or community development.

Working with Ms. Lewis has been an awesome experience. She makes English feel way more approachable and helps break down writing concepts in a way that actually makes sense. Before, I struggled with certain ideas, but she takes the time to explain things clearly and really makes sure we get it.

Attending the Adult Literacy webinar hosted by Birds Learning Network was an inspiring and enriching experience. The session delved into the profound connection between culture and literacy, highlighting how literacy is shaped by cultural norms, values, and traditions, and how it, in turn, preserves and strengthens cultural identity. Discussions explored the importance of culturally responsive practices in education and the role of literacy in documenting and passing down cultural knowledge.

As a participant, I gained valuable insights into how culture influences adult learning and how literacy can empower individuals and communities. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of fostering inclusive and culturally aware learning environments. As a graduate student at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, I found the webinar on the BLN Adult Literacy Program on January 06, 2025, to be deeply engaging and informative. Using a cultural and historically relevant prism, the program deepened and broadened my understanding of adult literacy. The information presented and the discussion it evoked valorized and re-signified alternative knowledges by employing diverse and creatively inspired pedagogical tools, including poetry and storytelling. The authenticity of the session resonated with me, and I am looking forward to subsequent sessions.
